It is all about the platform

Apple surprised the whole market with the advent of the iPod and their iTunes store, selling songs at 1$. They took everybody by surprise, and even more with the success it now has. What they did was the total user experience in an integrated platform. And the model is now being copied by Apple with the iPhone and the iStore for applications, Nokia and their Ovi Store, Google and their AppStore etc. All major brands combine it.

This concept is further pushed with the attractive user interfaces. What I see now happening is that other verticals also use this concept. TV stations (for instance VTM, their website and printed media), Solo (with their Open Kitchen), Amazon with their Kindle, etc.  These platforms are used to increase the brand and product loyalty of the consumers.

It is as if there is no loyalty anymore by just the virtues of one single product. It seems we have to combine different elements to satisfy the users. It sure is the consequence of more and more people being more active on the internet and the evolution of the technology. Even the elderly people get hooked.

Ford is now trying to integrate Twitter and Facebook right into their cars. This indicates the further integration of the different platforms we have today. Whatever you do, wherever you are, it will all be integrated into one large system. As I said in my previous article about user interfaces, there is now a microwave oven with Android embedded in it. This indicates that the platforms will be extended to other devices. It also indicates the advent of disruptive platforms for all our businesses.

Which platforms are you going to setup ? In B2B ? In B2C ?
