CO2 neutral websites

windmolen4

We came across a website saying that they deliver, together with Deloitte, a certificate for CO2 neutral websites. If you can prove that your website is fully covered with CO2 free energy, you can get your certificate. Let’s look at this new phenomenon.

Certificates are not new. You already start getting these at your birth, school, driving exam, docter, etc. and basically, when one you die you (or at least your family) also get a certificate of death. In business there are hundreds of certificates, like the ISO 9000 series.

But now we will need to get one for being green. And a viewpoint that we practically never hear is : what is the CO2 footprint of the internet ? Nobody knows, because it is a web of networks. Everybody can calculate his energy consumption for his part of the internet. Actually, we should also do this at home and calculate the energy consumption of the hub, access router, access modem and PC. And the other end is the website that we visit. The networks in between are managed by operators, and they have to rely on their energy providers for green energy, as well as us all the possibilities available on the market today.

The solution discussed at www.co2neutralwebsite.com is to give you a certificate for your website. Excellent ! These folks are also in the windturbines business, so there is a clear motivator for them to start this concept. The basic idea remains nevertheless excellent.

If we want to be CO2 neutral, we should thus also do this at home. Solar panels already started, but should we now also set up a mini windturbine on our roof to have a CO2-neutral-home-network ? And who will give a certificate ;-) ?
