Video conferencing on your TV. It does not come like a total surprise or rocket-innovating technology. I already mentioned it in an earlier post. But now it comes fairly quick. It should be available in Western-Europe in about 6 months time. Put on clean socks now, when watching TV ;-). As I don’t want to sell you soap to clean your socks, let’s talk about this trend.
Skype is pretty interesting, since they offer their services on home DECT phones, mobile phones, PC and now also on TV. Since they acquired their independence from Ebay in November 2009, they started unleashing their full potential. This is just one of their first moves in a long row that is going to come this year.
For Samsung it is a nice next step. They already combined some PC functionality in their TV, which allows you to access internet content right from your TV screen. According to their online demo, you can configure a number of widgets which will run in the background and can be popped up by the use of your remote control. Adding videoconferencing adds a whole new dimension to your TV experience.
I don’t know if it would influence my family’s decision to purchase this TV set, as we would definitely buy it for the TV functionalities in the first place. These functions would be a nice add-on today. But looking towards the future, it is a very interesting trend. It is the start of real convergence.
What do you think about this trend ?
