There are countless forms of communication used in a hospital today: email, SMS, telephony, written texts, verbal orders, paging, etc. This multiplication is all the more worrying as it affects the tens of people likely to be in contact with a patient. “We have counted 98!” says Nicole Hill, Healthcare Manager at Alcatel-Lucent. And we must also mention needs, which differ depending on the function or department, and according to the percentage of time spent in the office, elsewhere in the institution or outside it. Based on these analyses, Alcatel-Lucent developed specific solutions for each function (DECT, Wi-Fi, GSM, Unified Communication, etc). Nicole Hill mentions a few examples such as Annecy Regional Hospital in France or the Maimonides Medical Centre in Brooklyn (New York, USA). She also emphasises the difficulties and the cost of managing interference in a hospital environment. One of the solutions developed by Alcatel-Lucent is Unified In-Building Wireless (UIBW). “We have to be able to communicate appropriate information to the right person at the right time. With our Unified communications solution, we have a strategic advantage: through its flexibility and mobility, its single network, unified messaging system, etc.” underlines Nicole Hill.
