25 years of Windows

I did not know (read remember ;-) that Windows 1.0 was released on 20 november 1985 by Microsoft. That is an accomplishment : surviving for 25 years in the PC world. Yep, Windows evolved to what it is today. It did not stand still, it adapted to the new PCs and new PCs were adapted to Windows. Together with Microsoft Office. It generated a serious business, since it not only came on PCs, but also on servers. Great. But what holds the future ?

One Magazine on the iPad ?

We did not plan this upfront, but we are planning it now. The One Magazine on the iPad. The iPad is shaking the print industry. All the belgian press is talking about the product. It is like people were waiting for the device to come to their aid. Question is now whether the iPad will follow the same success in Belgium.

3 million iPads sold in 3 months. Better than ever expected. Datanews guessed we had 35.000 pieces sold in 2 weeks in Belgium, although exact numbers are not published.

From now on, you’ll be reading digital

Which e-reader is for you?

We have gotten pretty comfortable with digital music. Plus, this music has become more mobile than ever. What once would have been a rack full of CDs can now be stored on an mp3-player or a smartphone that you can take anywhere. Meanwhile, it is now possible to apply the same principle to your library. On a business trip, on the train or just at home on the couch: no more rummaging around with stacks of books, all of your reading material is instantly at hand on your e-reader. You purchase new titles online. The virtual bookshop comes to you. That is also a type of mobility. Read more

What struck me about the iPad

I am not going to discuss the iPad here, there is enough press coverage about it. But something that struck me is the pop-up keyboard window. Where is the stylus-based character recognition that we got 10 years ago in the Palm Pilot ? This article is about the user interface …

Finally less memory needed ?

The press about Apple and its product range are burgeoning about the coming Leopard Snow, the latest version of the operating system used by Apple (version 10.6).

Apple released information on their website about the new version, due in september. The announcement says that the OS will use up to 50% less disk space and that the Macs will boot and shut down faster (wake up 2x faster, shutdown 1.7x faster). Some functionalities in the Finder (comparable to Windows’ Explorer) will be faster, file backup will be up to 50% faster.

WOW ! They streamlined their operating system and made it smaller and more performant. Together with this Apple claims an increased stability of the OS. It has been tuned to take advantage of the 64 bit capabilities of the Intel processors, hence the improved performance.

Will this finally set in a trend of optimisation of the basis of IT ? Reduce the memory consumption, reduce the number of CPU cycles, streamlined and stable operations. Looking back at the developments in the last years : we always needed more disk and memory space, for a “better” user interface, with more graphics and music, and not that much more functionalities.

I sincerely hope that Apple breaks a long trend here. Imagine the advantages : happier users, less disk space, less RAM, better virtualisation, smaller updates, less heat generation, less electricity consumption.
