Is the cloud good for your business?

Debating the success of tomorrow

These days, the ‘cloud’ is the hype of the moment. But when is the big breakthrough going to come? Although the model offers promising possibilities, most companies are still assuming a wait-and-see stance. Data security appears to be a major concern. Is it really responsible to put business-critical data in the cloud? For that very reason, the interest in the ‘cloud’ seems currently geared primarily towards generic applications, such as e-mail and calendar. And yet the cloud can offer just as great an advantage for business-critical applications. The cost does not seem to be the major driver, but rather the scalability and rapid adaptability that the cloud makes possible.

Growing need for security

At the beginning of this year, Symantec conducted a survey among 2,100 IT managers, CISOs () and CIOs (chief information security officer) in 27 different countries, all working at companies with 500 or more employees. An important conclusion that they drew from this study is that company security still remains one of IT’s top concerns because the frequency of Web attacks continues to increase.

Protection against new types of attacks is only getting harder - in part because of the complexity of new technologies such as cloud computing and virtualization. This means growing costs for protection. Not self-evident, of course, in times when budgets are tight. Fortunately, they offer a number of practical recommendations on how best to protect the endpoint infrastructure and company information.

Look beyond the crisis

Gartner examines the way that companies are preparing for an economic recovery after the peak of the crisis and the impact that these adjustments to their behavior will have long-term. To do this, they analyzed trends such as cloud computing, social computing and the breakthrough of new technologies that will become available to end-users, such as powerful smartphones with continuous Internet connection.

They offer practical recommendations on how best to handle sensitive issues in the coming years, with regard to aspects such as Internet marketing and online privacy. One interesting point is that in their conclusions, the aspect of green IT crops up very frequently, to such a degree that they recommend that the carbon footprint of products and services be calculated and provided to customers.
