Survey exposes confusion
You can hardly open a magazine these days without reading a piece about the cloud. The whole IT world can’t stop talking about it. But what, in reality, is it all about? This is the question posed by the British specialist in document management Version One to 60 IT’ers. Simply put, cloud computing is the architecture concept that relies on Software as a Service (SaaS), and the associated services needed to provide it. Version One discovered that 41 percent of the IT’ers surveyed didn’t have the foggiest idea. Only three of the 60 IT’ers had experience using the cloud in their day-to-day work. One quarter of the respondents were unable to say whether or not their company was using the cloud. Granted, it is a small-scale study, so the statistics cannot be reliably extrapolated. Nevertheless, it indicates that there is a great need for information and communication. The cloud may be the buzzword of the moment, but it is a concept that obviously needs to be cleared up for a lot of people.
